Hazara’s industrial and dam district · Split from Abbottabad in 1991 · 1,174,783 people in 2023
Haripur is the Hazara district that faces Punjab. The Grand Trunk country of Khanpur, the factory belt of Hattar, and the water wall of Tarbela sit in the same file. Abbottabad kept the hill station. Haripur kept the river work. That 1991 split is how the map still reads.
Hindko is the mother tongue of about 942,000 people in the 2023 compilation — most of the district. Pashto is second, about 172,000. Urdu and Punjabi follow in much smaller rows. A page that calls Haripur a Pashto district because it is in KP has not opened the language table.
PBS-based 2023 compilations: 1,174,783 people, about 192,450 households. Males 591,540, females 583,198. Rural 1,027,018, urban 147,765. Literacy 74.88 percent overall — 84.13 percent men, 65.61 percent women. Under-tens about 282,000 (24 percent). Area of the three tehsils together is in the 1,700 km² range (Haripur 834, Ghazi 595, Khanpur 296).
That literacy line is close to Abbottabad’s. The economy is not. Hattar Industrial Estate and the dam colonies are why a Haripur graduate talks about factories and WAPDA as often as about colleges.
Haripur tehsil — 834 km², 836,058 people, about 1,000 per km², literacy about 76 percent. Headquarters town, Khalabat / dam-colony side, and Hattar. This one tehsil holds most of the district.
Khanpur tehsil — 296 km², 186,886 people, literacy about 73.8 percent. Khanpur Dam is the reservoir that supplies raw water toward the Islamabad–Rawalpindi side. Hindko is about 90 percent of this tehsil’s 2023 tongue row. The town sits south of Haripur city, closer to the Punjab border than to Mansehra.
Ghazi tehsil — 595 km², 151,839 people, literacy about 69.7 percent. Named for the Indus crossing and the Ghazi–Barotha hydropower work. THQ Ghazi is the public hospital name on older facility lists. Fewer factories than Hattar; more river and village.
Tarbela is the structure the rest of Pakistan already knows. The reservoir edge, the colonies, and the road that serves them are inside this district’s daily life. Khanpur Dam is smaller and closer to the capital’s water plan. Ghazi–Barotha is the channel-and-power story on the Indus. None of those three is a “tourist lake” sentence. They are why electricians, drivers and contractors live here.
Hattar is the industrial name. Pharmaceutical and manufacturing units draw labour from Haripur town and from the villages. When those units slow, the bazaar feels it the same week.
University of Haripur is the local campus name. Students also ride to Abbottabad and to Taxila. Government colleges sit in the city and in the tehsil towns. DHQ Haripur is the main public hospital. THQ Ghazi and THQ Khanpur take the first cases in those tehsils. Female literacy at 66 percent is strong for KP; the remaining gap is in the farther Ghazi villages, not in the city college.
