Nasirabad looks different from the Balochistan many people imagine. Instead of an overwhelmingly dry mountain landscape, much of the district is made up of flat agricultural plains shaped by canals, fields, villages and irrigation infrastructure.
The district is centred on Dera Murad Jamali and occupies an important position in the Nasirabad Division, where Balochistan connects economically and geographically with Sindh.
According to the 2023 Census, Nasirabad had a population of 563,315 over an area of 3,387 square kilometres. About 106,952 people lived in urban areas and 456,363 in rural areas. ([pbs.gov.pk](https://www.pbs.gov.pk/sites/default/files/population/2023/tables/table_1_balochistan_districts.pdf))
Nasirabad's most important story is agriculture.
The Balochistan Agriculture Department describes Nasirabad as a key rice-producing district that also grows wheat and sugarcane. Its extensive irrigation distinguishes it from many of the province's drier districts. ([crs-agriculture.gob.pk](https://crs-agriculture.gob.pk/balochistan-districts-at-a-glance/))
Agriculture is not simply one sector of the local economy. For much of the rural population, farming determines employment, household income, food production and the rhythm of village life.
Rainfall alone cannot explain Nasirabad's agricultural productivity.
The district benefits from an extensive irrigation network, especially the Pat Feeder Canal system and associated canals. A major rehabilitation project describes the Pat Feeder command as covering about 185,500 hectares and identifies irrigation, drainage and flood protection as central components of the system. ([ecil.com](https://ecil.com/projects/details/Pat-Feeder-Canal-Rehabilitation-and-Improvement-Project))
This infrastructure transformed large areas of the plains into dependable agricultural land.
The Pat Feeder Canal is one of the defining pieces of infrastructure in Nasirabad.
The canal system is connected to the Guddu Barrage command and carries Indus-system water into Balochistan's agricultural plains.
The system serves agricultural areas in Nasirabad and neighbouring districts, making water management a regional issue rather than a concern limited to one district.
A canal can look like a simple strip of water on a map, but its economic influence is much larger.
Water availability determines when farmers can sow crops, how much land can be cultivated, which crops can be grown and whether livestock can be supported alongside agriculture.
In Nasirabad, the irrigation network is therefore part of the district's economic infrastructure.
Irrigation does not mean that water is unlimited.
Farmers and local communities have experienced problems involving canal supply, damaged infrastructure, drainage and unequal access to water.
Reports on the Pat Feeder system have also documented concerns about reduced water reaching some tail-end areas following flood damage and subsequent management problems.
The lesson is important: building a canal is only the beginning. Maintaining, managing and fairly distributing its water is equally important.
Rice is one of the crops most strongly associated with Nasirabad's agricultural identity.
Government agricultural sources identify the district as a major rice-producing area within Balochistan. ([crs-agriculture.gob.pk](https://crs-agriculture.gob.pk/balochistan-districts-at-a-glance/))
Rice also demonstrates why irrigation has such a major influence on the district. Without dependable water, large-scale rice cultivation would be difficult in this otherwise hot and relatively dry environment.
Wheat is another major crop.
A recent district profile records wheat production of approximately 325,620 tonnes in 2022–23, compared with about 262,680 tonnes in 2021–22. These figures come from district agricultural production data compiled in the profile and should be understood as annual production estimates. ([pildat.org](https://pildat.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/NasirabadDistrictProfile.pdf))
Wheat is particularly important because it serves both local food needs and wider markets.
Sugarcane is another established crop in Nasirabad.
Its cultivation reflects the district's ability to support water-intensive crops where irrigation is available.
Nasirabad's agricultural economy is more diverse than rice and wheat alone.
District production data record significant quantities of onions and tomatoes. The same agricultural profile reports approximately 68,319 tonnes of onions and 37,569 tonnes of tomatoes in 2022–23. ([pildat.org](https://pildat.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/NasirabadDistrictProfile.pdf))
Other crops include fodder, chickpeas, rapeseed and mustard, sunflower and additional vegetables.
Dera Murad Jamali is the administrative centre of Nasirabad and the headquarters of Nasirabad Division.
The city had a 2023 population of about 106,952 according to the Census urban-locality figures.
Its location makes it a natural centre for government, trade, transport, education, healthcare and agricultural commerce.
The modern city's history contains a reminder of the British administrative period.
The High Court of Balochistan records that the settlement's original name was Temple Dera, after Captain H. M. Temple, a British civil servant who served as Political Agent for Sibi in 1891–92.
Local usage retained a form of the older name, remembered as “Tipul”, derived from “Temple.” ([bhc.gov.pk](https://bhc.gov.pk/district-judiciary/dera-murad-jamali/introduction/history))
The town later became known as Dera Murad Jamali and became the headquarters of the district created in 1974.
The present district is younger than the communities and agricultural settlements that occupy its plains.
Historically, the area belonged to the wider political world of Kalat.
Nasirabad was part of the Kalat administrative system before it eventually became a separate district.
Nasirabad was notified as a separate district in 1974.
It was created by separating the area from Kalat District. Dera Murad Jamali became the headquarters. ([bhc.gov.pk](https://bhc.gov.pk/district-judiciary/dera-murad-jamali/introduction/history))
The district experienced an unusual administrative chapter between July 1987 and December 1990.
During this period it was known as Tamboo District. Tamboo is a settlement located about 40 kilometres west of Dera Murad Jamali. ([bhc.gov.pk](https://bhc.gov.pk/district-judiciary/dera-murad-jamali/introduction/history))
The district later returned to the name Nasirabad.
The wider Nasirabad name is connected to the history of the Khanate of Kalat and is commonly associated with Mir Nasir Khan I, the prominent Khan of Kalat who ruled from 1747 to 1794.
The district's later administrative history, however, also contains a more recent naming story connected with Naseer Ahmad, a government administrator associated with the Tamboo period.
These overlapping naming traditions are a useful reminder that administrative names can change as governments and boundaries change.
Nasirabad is linguistically diverse.
The 2023 Census records approximately:
These figures come directly from the Census mother-tongue table and show how Nasirabad sits at a cultural meeting point between several linguistic regions. ([pbs.gov.pk](https://www.pbs.gov.pk/wp-content/uploads/census_tables/tables/table_11_balochistan_districts.pdf))
Balochi is the largest single mother tongue in the district.
Its strong presence reflects the Baloch communities that have historically lived across the region.
Brahui is another major language and connects Nasirabad culturally with other parts of central and eastern Balochistan.
Sindhi has a particularly important presence because Nasirabad is closely connected to Sindh geographically and economically.
The language also reflects long-standing movement of people, farmers and traders across the Balochistan–Sindh boundary.
Saraiki is another significant mother tongue, reinforcing the district's position at the intersection of several cultural regions.
Nasirabad's communities have been shaped by agriculture, tribal affiliation, migration and settlement along irrigated land.
Baloch communities form an important part of the district's social landscape, while Brahui, Sindhi and Saraiki-speaking populations contribute to its linguistic and cultural diversity.
Villages are often closely tied to irrigation channels and agricultural land. Water access can therefore influence not only farming but also where communities expand and how rural economies develop.
Islam is overwhelmingly the majority religion in Nasirabad.
The 2023 census-based figures place Muslims at about 99.21% of the population, while Hindu residents make up about 0.5%, with other religious communities making up the remaining share.
The presence of a Hindu minority is nevertheless part of the district's historical and social diversity, particularly in a region connected to Sindh and the old trading and agricultural networks of the lower Indus plain.
Geography explains much of Nasirabad's economic importance.
Unlike the rugged mountain districts of western and northern Balochistan, much of Nasirabad consists of comparatively flat plains.
This makes large-scale cultivation possible where water is available.
Nasirabad has a very hot summer climate.
NDMA district material lists a maximum temperature of around 52°C, illustrating the severity of summer conditions. ([ndma.gov.pk](https://www.ndma.gov.pk/storage/plans/July2024/IMHENvoz5hqnE9uZIsWH.pdf))
High temperatures increase crop water requirements and make reliable irrigation particularly important.
Nasirabad demonstrates a basic principle of agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions: productive land depends not only on soil but on water management.
The district can produce substantial crops because canals convert water from the wider Indus irrigation system into agricultural productivity.
That also means that climate change, extreme heat, floods, canal damage and water shortages can all have unusually large effects on local livelihoods.
Water is both Nasirabad's greatest economic asset and one of its greatest hazards.
Canal embankments and drainage infrastructure are essential because the same plains that are ideal for farming can also be vulnerable to flooding.
The Pat Feeder rehabilitation project specifically included flood protection against hill torrents, the Bolan River and other drainage channels. ([ecil.com](https://ecil.com/projects/details/Pat-Feeder-Canal-Rehabilitation-and-Improvement-Project))
This dual relationship with water — irrigation when controlled and flooding when uncontrolled — is central to understanding Nasirabad.
Livestock remains important alongside crop farming.
Sheep, goats, cattle and other animals provide food and income for rural households and can serve as an economic buffer when crop yields are weak.
Better veterinary services, vaccination, fodder production and organized livestock markets could strengthen this part of the rural economy.
Education remains one of Nasirabad's major development challenges.
The 2023 Census reports an overall literacy rate of about 28.96%, with male literacy around 36.43% and female literacy around 21.18%.
The figures show a substantial gender gap, making girls' education one of the most important long-term investments for the district.
The challenge is not simply building schools.
Rural families also need teachers, safe transport, functioning classrooms, girls' schools, secondary education and pathways into colleges and technical training.
Because most of Nasirabad's population remains rural, education planning must account for scattered settlements rather than focusing only on Dera Murad Jamali.
Dera Murad Jamali is the main concentration of healthcare and administrative services, but rural communities require accessible primary healthcare as well.
Maternal healthcare, child health, emergency response, vaccination and reliable referral transport are particularly important across the agricultural villages.
Dera Murad Jamali is more than a district headquarters.
It serves as the headquarters of Nasirabad Division and functions as an administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural region.
The city's position near the Balochistan–Sindh connection gives it importance for agricultural trade and transport.
Dera Murad Jamali is also connected to Pakistan's railway network through the Rohri–Chaman railway corridor.
Road and rail connections are important because the district's agricultural economy depends on moving large quantities of crops beyond local markets.
Nasirabad cannot be fully understood without considering neighbouring Sindh.
The division functions as a major connection between Balochistan and Sindh, while Sindhi is one of the district's major mother tongues.
Agricultural products, labour, traders and cultural influences move across this boundary in both directions.
This makes Nasirabad a cultural transition zone rather than a place with one single identity.
Balochi, Brahui, Sindhi and Saraiki-speaking communities coexist within the same irrigated landscape.
Nasirabad has an opportunity to move beyond simply producing crops.
Agricultural processing could create additional employment through:
Value-added agriculture would allow more of the economic value of each crop to remain within the district.
A rice field is only the beginning of the economic chain.
Farmers need seed, fertilizer, irrigation, machinery, harvesting equipment, transport, storage, milling and access to buyers.
Improving each link can be more valuable than simply increasing the amount of land under cultivation.
Nasirabad's agricultural future will depend heavily on using irrigation water more efficiently.
Canal rehabilitation, improved drainage, field-level water management, laser land levelling and better irrigation scheduling can reduce losses while maintaining agricultural production.
Nasirabad's geography creates a difficult combination:
Climate-resilient agriculture therefore needs to be part of the district's long-term planning.
Before the modern district
The area belonged to the wider political and administrative world of Kalat.
British period
Temple Dera developed as an administrative settlement associated with
Captain H. M. Temple.
1954
Kalat became an important administrative framework for the region.
1974
Nasirabad was notified as a separate district.
1987–1990
The district was known as Tamboo District.
1990
The name Nasirabad was restored.
1987 onward
The creation of Nasirabad Division strengthened Dera Murad Jamali's role
as a regional administrative centre.
2023
Census population reaches 563,315.
The administrative structure of Nasirabad has changed over time, and older government documents list three or four tehsils while newer census material reflects additional administrative units.
The 2023 Census table specifically lists Baba Kot Tehsil and Chattar Sub-Division, alongside the Dera Murad Jamali and Tamboo administrative areas. This is why older district pages may show a different subdivision structure.
Rather than treating one older list as permanent, MyBook.Pk should preserve the distinction between historical and current administrative boundaries.
The 2023 Census gives Baba Kot Tehsil a population of 53,661 over approximately 967 km².
Its population is entirely classified as rural in the census table.
Chattar Sub-Division recorded about 32,276 residents in the 2023 Census and is another predominantly rural part of the district.
The large rural population means that development cannot be measured only through the growth of Dera Murad Jamali.
Rural roads, farm services, irrigation channels, schools, health centres, electricity and digital connectivity all directly affect household welfare.
Nasirabad matters because it performs a role that is unusual within Balochistan.
It is one of the province's strongest agricultural and irrigated regions, connecting Balochistan's economy to the Indus irrigation system.
The district therefore demonstrates that Balochistan's economic geography is much more diverse than mountains, deserts and minerals.
Nasirabad already has one of the most valuable foundations for economic development: productive irrigated land.
The next step is to make that agricultural system more productive, resilient and valuable.
Better canal management can protect water supplies. Better drainage can reduce flood and waterlogging risks. Better storage and processing can increase farmers' income. Better education can prepare the next generation for modern agriculture and other sectors.
The district can also strengthen its position as a logistics and agricultural gateway between Balochistan and Sindh.
Nasirabad's greatest distinction is simple: water has made agriculture possible on a large scale in a province where much of the landscape is dry.
Its canals, rice fields, wheat farms, sugarcane fields and vegetable production create a landscape unlike the highland and desert districts farther west.
At the same time, its languages show that Nasirabad is a meeting point: Balochi, Brahui, Sindhi and Saraiki-speaking communities share the same agricultural region.
Nasirabad is a district where water, agriculture, history and connectivity come together.
Its story begins with older political connections to Kalat, continues through British-era administration and the development of Temple Dera, and reaches the modern district centred on Dera Murad Jamali.
Its future depends on maintaining the infrastructure that makes its agricultural economy possible while investing in education, healthcare, climate resilience, water efficiency and agricultural value addition.
Nasirabad is the irrigated face of Balochistan: a district of rice and wheat fields, canals and villages, hot summers and flood risks, diverse languages and a strategic connection between Balochistan and Sindh.
