Malir District

Karachi's eastern landscape of farms, villages, coast, industry, transport corridors and rapidly expanding urban settlements

Province: Sindh

Division: Karachi Division

2023 population: 2,432,248

Area: approximately 2,160 km²

Subdivisions: 6

District headquarters: Malir

Malir is one of the most geographically varied districts of Karachi. Unlike the intensely built-up central districts of the metropolis, Malir contains a mixture of established neighbourhoods, cantonment areas, old villages, agricultural land, dry hills, coastal settlements, industrial zones and major transport infrastructure. It is therefore difficult to describe Malir simply as either an urban district or a rural one. It is both, and that contrast is one of its defining characteristics.

The district stretches across a large eastern and southeastern portion of Karachi. Its territory includes the airport area, Malir Cantonment, Gadap's broad rural landscape, Bin Qasim and its industrial corridor, Ibrahim Hyderi's fishing communities, Murad Memon and the historically important settlements around Malir. The six administrative subdivisions are Airport, Bin Qasim, Gadap, Ibrahim Hyderi, Murad Memon and Shah Mureed.

Malir in the 2023 Census

Pakistan's 2023 census gives Malir District a population of approximately 2.43 million people. With an area of about 2,160 square kilometres, Malir is geographically much larger than several of Karachi's densely populated districts. The result is a much lower overall population density than districts such as Karachi Central or Korangi.

The population is not distributed evenly. Ibrahim Hyderi contains very large urban and peri-urban communities, while parts of Gadap and Shah Mureed retain much more open land. Airport and cantonment areas have their own distinctive settlement patterns, while Bin Qasim combines villages, industrial activity, port-related development and newer residential areas.

The Six Subdivisions of Malir

1. Airport

Airport subdivision includes the area surrounding Jinnah International Airport as well as important cantonment and residential zones. It is strategically significant because Karachi's principal international airport connects the city with Pakistan's other regions and the wider world. The subdivision also contains Malir Cantonment and areas that connect the eastern side of Karachi with the airport and central city.

2. Bin Qasim

Bin Qasim represents one of Malir's strongest industrial and maritime faces. The subdivision lies toward the southeastern side of Karachi and includes communities and industrial areas connected with Port Qasim and the wider Bin Qasim industrial corridor. It also contains older rural settlements alongside large-scale industrial and logistics activity.

3. Gadap

Gadap is one of the largest and most rural-looking parts of Karachi. Historically, the wider Gadap landscape contained Sindhi and Kalmati Baloch villages and agricultural communities. Today it includes a mixture of villages, farms, housing schemes, highways, quarrying areas and rapidly changing peri-urban settlements.

4. Ibrahim Hyderi

Ibrahim Hyderi is closely associated with Karachi's fishing economy. The settlement developed around a natural harbour environment and has long been home to fishing families. Rehri Goth and nearby coastal communities add another important dimension to Malir's social and economic identity.

Ibrahim Hyderi is particularly important for understanding the human geography of Karachi. Fishing households, boat owners, fish workers, traders and associated labourers form an economic network extending from local landing sites into Karachi's wider seafood market.

5. Murad Memon

Murad Memon includes a number of older settlements and villages as well as rapidly urbanising areas. It is also connected with Malir's former agricultural landscape, where orchards and vegetable cultivation once played a much larger role in the local economy.

6. Shah Mureed

Shah Mureed is another comparatively open part of the district. Its landscape helps demonstrate how different Malir is from the compact urban districts closer to Karachi's historic centre. Villages, agricultural traces and undeveloped land coexist with the outward expansion of metropolitan Karachi.

Why Malir Was Known as Karachi's Countryside

Older generations in Karachi often remember Malir for its greenery, orchards and vegetable farms. The district once supplied fresh agricultural produce to the growing city. Fruit such as chikoo, custard apple and papaya became associated with Malir's agricultural identity.

That agricultural landscape has changed substantially. Population growth, housing construction, groundwater stress and extraction of sand and gravel have placed pressure on farmland and natural drainage systems. In some locations, land that was previously productive agricultural ground has been converted into residential development.

This transformation is one of the most important stories of modern Malir. The district is not simply losing farmland because of one factor. Urban expansion, water availability, infrastructure, land prices and changing livelihoods all influence the process.

Malir River and the Environment

The Malir River and its tributaries are important parts of the district's physical geography. Although the river is seasonal rather than a permanently flowing river like the Indus, its drainage system becomes extremely important during heavy rainfall. The river's natural channels also play a role in groundwater recharge and flood management.

Environmental organisations and local observers have raised concerns about groundwater depletion and the removal of sand and gravel from riverbeds. These issues matter because Malir's older farms depended on groundwater and because changes to natural drainage can increase environmental risks.

Gadap: Villages, Hills and the Expanding City

Gadap gives Malir some of its strongest rural characteristics. The subdivision contains scattered settlements, agricultural land, dry hills and open spaces that look very different from downtown Karachi. At the same time, highways and housing development are gradually bringing metropolitan Karachi deeper into this landscape.

The area has long been associated with Sindhi-speaking communities and Baloch groups including Kalmati and Gabol communities. The older village structure remains an important part of local identity even where new housing and commercial development has appeared around it.

Chaukhandi Tombs

One of Malir's most important heritage landmarks is the Chaukhandi Tombs. The sandstone tombs are recognised for their elaborate carved decoration and are associated with the historic communities of the eastern Karachi region.

The tombs provide a visible connection between modern Karachi and the older societies that existed in the region before the metropolis expanded to its present scale. Their carved sandstone architecture is particularly valuable because it records local traditions of funerary art, craftsmanship and tribal identity.

Some tombs contain inscriptions and dates that place individual monuments in the early modern period. The complex is therefore more than a tourist attraction: it is part of the archaeological landscape of Karachi.

Ibrahim Hyderi and Karachi's Fishing Communities

Karachi is often described as an industrial and commercial city, but its fishing communities are equally important to its coastal identity. Ibrahim Hyderi is one of the best-known fishing settlements in the Malir area.

Fishing is not limited to the person who goes to sea. It supports boat construction, engine repair, ice production, fish processing, transportation, wholesale trade and retail markets. Women and family members also participate in parts of the wider seafood economy.

The settlement's history is also connected with the movement of fishing families within Karachi. Over generations, families displaced or relocated from older coastal neighbourhoods established themselves in places such as Ibrahim Hyderi and nearby settlements.

Port Qasim and the Industrial Southeast

Malir's Bin Qasim side is closely connected with one of Pakistan's most important maritime-industrial zones. Port Qasim was developed as a major deep-water port and became an important part of Pakistan's international trade infrastructure.

The wider Bin Qasim industrial area also contains large industrial facilities and logistics operations. Pakistan Steel Mills, industrial estates, warehouses, transport businesses and port-related services have given southeastern Karachi a very different economic character from the commercial districts around Saddar and I.I. Chundrigar Road.

It is important, however, not to assign Karachi-wide GDP or federal tax figures directly to Malir. Official sources commonly report these figures for Karachi, a tax jurisdiction or a wider administrative region rather than for Malir District alone.

Education in Malir

Education in Malir ranges from government schools in long-established villages to private schools and colleges serving large urban neighbourhoods and cantonment communities.

The Sindh Annual School Census 2023–24 profile records 601 schools in Malir, of which 533 were functional. The reported enrolment was 70,309 students, supported by 2,941 teachers.

The school network included primary, elementary, middle, secondary and higher-secondary institutions. The figures illustrate both the size of the education system and the challenge of maintaining functioning schools across a district whose settlements range from dense urban communities to widely dispersed rural areas.

Malir's Famous People and Public Figures

Malir's list of notable personalities is different from districts that are known mainly for producing writers or entertainment celebrities. Many of the strongest documented associations are with politics, cricket and local public life.

Saeed Anwar — Cricket

One of the most prominent sporting names associated with Malir is Saeed Anwar, the former Pakistan opening batsman. Anwar attended Government Degree Science College, Malir Cantt and developed his cricket through Karachi's club system. He was also associated with Malir Gymkhana, where his development as a batsman accelerated.

Saeed Anwar should therefore be described as a major cricketer strongly associated with Malir rather than incorrectly labelled as someone born specifically in Malir. His career included international cricket for Pakistan and he became one of the country's most recognisable left-handed opening batsmen.

Abdul Hakeem Baloch — Politics

Abdul Hakeem Baloch is a prominent political figure belonging to Malir. His political career has included service in the National Assembly and a federal ministerial role. The National Assembly's current profile places him in NA-231 Malir-III, while the District Administration Malir also identifies him as a personality belonging to the district.

Jam Abdul Karim Bijar — Politics

Jam Abdul Karim Bijar is another major political personality associated with Malir. He has represented the district in the National Assembly and comes from the local political and tribal landscape of Malir.

Syed Agha Rafiullah — Politics

Syed Agha Rafiullah is a politician associated with Malir who has represented the district in the National Assembly. His political career is connected with the district's electoral and local organisational structure.

Muhammad Yousuf Baloch

Muhammad Yousuf Baloch is another political figure identified by the District Administration Malir as belonging to the district. His public career has included membership of the Sindh Assembly and work related to provincial public policy.

Muhammad Sajid Jokhio

Muhammad Sajid Jokhio, also known as Saji Jokhio, is associated with Malir's political landscape and has represented the district at the provincial level.

Malir has produced and hosted many other politicians, local leaders, community organisers, athletes and professionals. Because residential addresses and electoral boundaries change over time, MyBook.Pk distinguishes between people who are documented as belonging to Malir and people who merely contested a constituency located there.

Languages and Community Life

Malir's social character reflects the wider diversity of Karachi. Sindhi has a particularly strong historical presence in the district, especially in rural and older settlements. Pashto, Urdu, Balochi, Punjabi, Hindko and Saraiki are also spoken by significant communities.

This linguistic diversity is connected to migration, employment, fishing, transport, industry and the expansion of Karachi. In many neighbourhoods, several languages can be heard within the same marketplace, school or workplace.

Malir Cantonment and Airport Corridor

Malir Cantonment gives the district another distinctive identity. Cantonment areas have their own institutional and administrative arrangements and contain residential, educational and service facilities associated with the armed forces and civilian communities.

The airport corridor is equally important. Jinnah International Airport is Karachi's principal air gateway, making the surrounding eastern part of the city strategically important for passenger travel, cargo, logistics and national connectivity.

Transport and Connectivity

Malir sits at the junction of several important transport routes. Roads linking the airport with eastern Karachi, the Super Highway corridor, Malir's older urban settlements, Bin Qasim and the southeastern industrial belt all pass through or connect with the district.

The district's large geographic size means that transport needs are different from those of compact central Karachi. Some residents live close to major urban corridors, while others travel much farther from villages and peripheral settlements to reach schools, hospitals, markets and employment.

Water, Housing and Urban Expansion

One of Malir's biggest long-term challenges is balancing urban growth with water and environmental resources. Housing societies and construction projects have expanded into areas that historically contained farms, orchards, open land and villages.

Groundwater is particularly important in parts of the district. Declining groundwater availability can affect both agriculture and household water security. The loss of natural drainage and changes to riverbeds can also increase environmental vulnerability.

The future of Malir therefore depends partly on whether development can protect important natural drainage channels, improve water management and preserve significant heritage and agricultural areas while still accommodating Karachi's growing population.

Malir's Economic Identity

Malir's economy cannot be reduced to one sector. Agriculture remains important in the district's historical identity, fishing is central to coastal communities, industry dominates parts of Bin Qasim, transport and logistics benefit from the airport and major highways, and construction is transforming the peri-urban landscape.

This mixture makes Malir economically unusual within Karachi. It connects rural production with metropolitan consumption and links coastal fishing communities with international maritime trade.

Heritage, Nature and Places to Know

Malir and the Future of Karachi

Malir is likely to remain one of the most important areas for Karachi's future expansion. Its size provides opportunities for housing, industry, logistics and infrastructure, but the same open spaces that make development possible also contain ecological, agricultural and heritage value.

The key question is therefore not whether Malir will urbanise. Much of that transformation is already underway. The more important question is how it will urbanise. Protecting drainage systems, managing groundwater, conserving heritage, improving public education and healthcare, and ensuring that older villages and fishing communities are not ignored will shape the district's future.

Malir represents a part of Karachi that is easy to overlook when the city is described only through its high-rise commercial districts and crowded urban neighbourhoods. Its farms, villages, coast, tombs, fishing communities, cantonments, airport and industrial corridor reveal a much older and more complicated story.

Sources and methodology: Population and administrative information is based primarily on Pakistan Bureau of Statistics census material and official Karachi administrative sources. Education figures use the Sindh Annual School Census 2023–24. Historical and cultural information is cross-checked against district and Sindh sources where available. Famous-person associations are labelled carefully as born, raised, resident or politically associated rather than assuming every notable person was born inside the present-day district boundary.
