Korangi District: The Industrial Heart and Sporting Neighbourhoods of Eastern Karachi

Karachi Division · Sindh · Census 2023 · Entirely Urban

Korangi is a district built around work. Its identity comes from planned housing, industrial production, railway and road connections, markets, schools, cricket grounds and millions of residents who have made eastern Karachi their home.

From the planned Korangi Township established in 1959 to the factories of Korangi Industrial Area and the cricket grounds of Model Colony, the district represents one of the clearest examples of Karachi's transformation from a port city into a huge industrial metropolis.

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics 2023 census records 3,128,971 people in Korangi District. The district covers only 108 square kilometres, producing a population density of almost 29,000 people per square kilometre.

The population includes 1,650,172 males, 1,478,133 females and 666 transgender persons. Every resident is classified as urban. The average household contains 6.3 people, while the reported annual population growth rate is 3.29 percent.

These figures help explain the physical character of Korangi. This is a compact, extremely busy district in which residential neighbourhoods and industrial employment are located close to one another.

The Four Parts of Korangi

Korangi Subdivision

Korangi is the largest of the district's four subdivisions by population. The 2023 census records 1,363,992 residents and an area of 59 square kilometres. Its density is more than 23,000 people per square kilometre.

Korangi Township was established in 1959 as part of the planned expansion of Karachi. The township was designed to provide housing for workers and families as the city industrialised.

Landhi Subdivision

Landhi contains 681,294 people in an area of only 19 square kilometres. Its density is approximately 35,858 people per square kilometre, making it one of the most intensely populated parts of the district.

Landhi is strongly associated with working-class housing, markets, industry, rail connections and the wider industrial economy of eastern Karachi.

Model Colony Subdivision

Model Colony contains 441,791 residents in just nine square kilometres. Its population density is almost 49,088 people per square kilometre.

Model Colony has an unusually strong sporting identity. The area has been home to a number of Pakistan's cricket stars and sports broadcasters.

Shah Faisal Subdivision

Shah Faisal covers 21 square kilometres and forms an important residential and transport corridor between Korangi, Landhi and the airport-side areas of Karachi.

Drigh Road and surrounding neighbourhoods have long been connected with Karachi's transport and aviation-oriented urban growth.

Why Korangi Township Was Created

The history of modern Korangi begins in the late 1950s. Pakistan's young industrial economy was expanding rapidly, and Karachi needed housing for workers as factories and businesses multiplied.

Korangi Township was established in 1959 as a planned settlement. It represented an important idea in Karachi's development: rather than allowing all new population to settle without planning, authorities could create organised residential areas linked to employment.

The experiment was ambitious. Roads, schools, markets and residential sectors were laid out as the population expanded.

Over subsequent decades, however, Korangi became much more than a planned township. Informal expansion, migration, commercial growth and industrial development transformed it into one of Karachi's largest urban districts.

Korangi Industrial Area

The Korangi Industrial Area is the economic feature most strongly associated with the district.

Factories in the area cover a wide range of industries including pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, textiles, garments, chemicals, plastics, engineering, automotive-related production, packaging and other manufacturing.

Companies associated with the wider Korangi industrial ecosystem include Getz Pharma, Indus Pharma, Martin Dow and other manufacturing businesses. The Korangi Creek Industrial Park has also been developed as an industrial park and special economic zone.

This industrial base gives Korangi a role that extends beyond Karachi's consumer economy. Goods manufactured here enter supply chains serving Pakistan's domestic market and, in some cases, export markets.

A District Where Jobs Shape Geography

One of Korangi's defining characteristics is the close relationship between housing and employment.

Many residents live near industrial areas, while others travel to factories, offices, markets and businesses in neighbouring districts. This creates heavy daily movement along Korangi Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Shahrah-e-Faisal and connecting routes.

The district's economy therefore depends on reliable electricity, roads, public transport, water, drainage and waste management. Infrastructure problems can directly affect both household life and industrial productivity.

Languages of Korangi

Korangi's population reflects the migration history of Karachi. Urdu is the largest language group, but Sindhi, Pashto, Punjabi, Balochi, Saraiki and other languages are spoken throughout the district.

The mix is especially visible in markets and workplaces, where people from different parts of Pakistan interact every day.

This multilingual character is one reason Korangi should not be reduced to the image of an industrial zone. It is also a major cultural meeting point.

Education: The Numbers

The Sindh Annual School Census 2023–24 provides a useful picture of education in Korangi. Reported enrolment was 26,688 at primary level, 953 at elementary level, 1,708 at middle level, 47,070 at secondary level and 10,779 at higher-secondary level.

The district's reported enrolment across these levels was therefore more than 87,000 students.

The medium-wise figures recorded 79,483 students in Urdu-medium education, 7,241 in English-medium education and 474 in Sindhi-medium education.

The school census also shows different enrolment totals across Korangi, Landhi, Model Colony and Shah Faisal, confirming that education is distributed throughout the district rather than concentrated in one neighbourhood.

Korangi's Cricket Story

If the industrial area represents Korangi's economic identity, cricket represents one of its most recognisable cultural stories.

Model Colony in particular has produced and housed a remarkable group of Pakistani cricketers. Local accounts describe Faryal Ground as a place where young players including Saeed Anwar and Rashid Latif developed before becoming national stars.

This is important because it demonstrates how neighbourhood grounds can become part of a country's sporting infrastructure. Young players did not necessarily begin their careers in elite academies. Many learned the game in ordinary Karachi grounds.

Famous People and Celebrities Connected with Korangi

Korangi has a particularly strong list of notable residents because Model Colony became home to several Pakistan cricketers and media personalities. The people below are included because documented sources connect them with Model Colony or other parts of present-day Korangi District.

Saeed Anwar — Pakistan Cricket Great

Saeed Anwar is one of Pakistan's most famous opening batsmen. He is specifically associated with Model Colony, where he developed his cricket during his youth. Local reporting about Faryal Ground recalls watching Anwar and Rashid Latif play there before they became international stars.

Anwar went on to represent Pakistan in Test and One-Day International cricket and became famous for elegant left-handed batting and major international innings.

Rashid Latif — Pakistan Captain and Wicketkeeper

Former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper Rashid Latif is another major cricket name connected with Model Colony. His early cricket was associated with the local grounds of the area.

Latif represented Pakistan in Tests and ODIs and later became a cricket analyst and commentator. His connection with Model Colony is an important part of Korangi's sporting heritage.

Basit Ali — International Cricketer

Basit Ali is another Pakistan international cricketer listed among notable Model Colony residents. He represented Pakistan in Test and One-Day International cricket and later remained involved in coaching and cricket analysis.

Asim Kamal — Test Cricketer

Asim Kamal, the Pakistan Test batsman, is also associated with Model Colony. His inclusion illustrates the depth of cricket talent that emerged from Karachi's neighbourhood grounds.

Saeed Azad — National Cricketer

Saeed Azad is another national-level cricketer identified as a notable resident of Model Colony. His name forms part of the area's broader cricket history.

Rizwan Malik — Cricketer

Rizwan Malik is a further cricketer associated with Model Colony. His presence in local records demonstrates that the area's sporting tradition extends beyond its best-known international stars.

Maham Tariq — Women's Cricket

Maham Tariq is a Pakistani women's cricketer associated with Model Colony. Her inclusion is particularly significant because it shows that Korangi's cricket culture has not been limited to men's cricket.

Mirza Iqbal Baig — Sports Journalist and Broadcaster

Mirza Iqbal Baig is a well-known Pakistani sports journalist, cricket analyst, commentator and television host. He is documented as a notable resident of Model Colony.

His career adds another dimension to Korangi's cricket connection: the district has been associated not only with players but also with people who explain, analyse and broadcast sport to national audiences.

Ruby Niazi — Actress

Ruby Niazi is identified in local Model Colony records as a film and television actress. Her inclusion reflects the neighbourhood's connection with Pakistan's entertainment community.

Ibrahim Nafees — Television Actor

Ibrahim Nafees is identified in local Model Colony material as a television actor. His association is included as part of the documented resident history of the neighbourhood.

Humera Bano — Television Actress

Humera Bano is another television actress listed in local historical material as a Model Colony resident.

Abida Ali — Television Actress

Abida Ali, a Pakistani television actress, is also listed among personalities associated with Model Colony. Her inclusion adds another entertainment connection to Korangi's otherwise strongly industrial and sporting identity.

Raheem Shah — Singer

Raheem Shah, the Pakistani singer known for Pashto and Urdu music, is included in local Model Colony personality records. His association reflects the multilingual cultural character of eastern Karachi.

Syed Umair Shah — Broadcaster and Performer

Syed Umair Shah has been identified in local Model Colony records as a broadcaster associated with Radio Pakistan and television/theatre work, as well as cricket. His career represents the overlap between sport and broadcasting in the area.

Hussain Haqqani — Diplomat and Writer

Hussain Haqqani, the Pakistani diplomat, journalist and author, has also been identified in historical local records connected with Model Colony. His later career took him far beyond Karachi, including service as Pakistan's ambassador to the United States.

Aasia Ishaque — Political Figure

Aasia Ishaque, associated with Pakistani political activity, is identified among notable Model Colony residents. Her political work adds another category to the district's list of public figures.

These connections should be read carefully. Not every person above was necessarily born in present-day Korangi District. Some were residents of Model Colony, which is now inside Korangi District. Because Karachi's administrative boundaries have changed, MyBook.Pk distinguishes “born here” from “notable resident” rather than combining both categories.

Model Colony and the 2020 Aviation Disaster

Model Colony also entered Pakistan's recent history after Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303 crashed near the neighbourhood during its approach to Jinnah International Airport on 22 May 2020.

The Airbus A320 came down in the Jinnah Garden area of Model Colony. The tragedy killed most people aboard the aircraft and also caused a death on the ground. The event deeply affected the local community.

It is an important part of the district's recent history, but Model Colony should not be defined only by the disaster. Its cricket heritage, residential life and long history as a Karachi neighbourhood are much broader.

Landhi: Industry, Labour and Community

Landhi has long been one of Karachi's major working-class districts. Residential areas developed alongside factories and transport corridors, allowing workers to live relatively close to employment.

The area also has a strong tradition of political organisation, trade unions, sports and neighbourhood associations.

Landhi's history demonstrates one of the central features of Karachi's growth: industrialisation creates not only factories but also schools, markets, housing, transport and entire communities around them.

Korangi's Industrial Diversity

The industrial area is much more diverse than the word “factory” suggests. Pharmaceutical companies produce medicines, food manufacturers supply national markets, textile companies employ workers, chemical businesses supply other industries and engineering firms provide machinery and industrial services.

This diversity reduces the district's dependence on one single industrial sector.

The Korangi Creek Industrial Park also represents a newer phase of industrial development, with planned industrial infrastructure intended to support manufacturing and investment.

GDP Contribution: What Is Safe to Claim?

Korangi is clearly an important part of Karachi's economic system, particularly because of manufacturing and industrial employment. However, there is no current official district-level national-accounts figure assigning an exact percentage of Pakistan's GDP to Korangi District.

Some commercial and local sources describe Korangi Industrial Area as a major contributor to Karachi's economy, but those statements should not be converted into a precise national GDP percentage without an official methodology.

The correct conclusion is that Korangi contributes through manufacturing, employment, supply chains, retail, services and industrial investment as part of the wider Karachi metropolitan economy.

Tax Contribution

The same caution applies to taxation. Federal tax jurisdictions do not perfectly match district boundaries. A company operating in Korangi may have corporate offices, warehouses or branches elsewhere in Karachi or Pakistan.

Korangi's industrial base nevertheless makes it an important source of taxable economic activity. Pharmaceuticals, food, textiles, chemicals, engineering, trade and other industries all participate in the formal economy.

MyBook.Pk therefore does not invent a district tax percentage. Instead, the page identifies the economic sectors through which Korangi contributes to Karachi's and Pakistan's tax base.

Transport

Korangi depends heavily on road and public transport networks. Korangi Road and the routes linking Landhi, Shah Faisal and the industrial areas carry large numbers of workers every day.

The district's connection to Shahrah-e-Faisal is particularly important because it links residential and industrial areas with central Karachi and the airport corridor.

The Drigh Road connection has also improved links between Korangi and the city's major east-west transport routes.

Markets and Everyday Economy

The industrial economy is only one layer of Korangi's economic life. Every neighbourhood contains markets, pharmacies, workshops, restaurants, schools, tailors, mechanics, grocery stores and small offices.

These businesses are supported by the district's huge population. A factory worker, teacher, shopkeeper, doctor, driver and home-based entrepreneur can all be part of the same local economic system.

Housing and Urban Pressure

With nearly 29,000 people per square kilometre, Korangi faces considerable pressure on land and infrastructure.

Water supply, sewerage, waste collection, road maintenance, electricity, parking, public transport and affordable housing remain important concerns. Industrial areas create additional environmental and traffic pressures.

The challenge is to maintain Korangi's role as an employment centre while ensuring that residential neighbourhoods remain healthy and liveable.

Korangi's Cultural Identity

Korangi's culture is largely a product of migration and working life. Urdu, Sindhi, Pashto, Punjabi, Balochi and other languages coexist in markets, schools and workplaces.

Food is one of the easiest ways to see this diversity. Karachi's broader traditions of biryani, barbecue, seafood, tea and street food mix with Pashtun, Sindhi, Punjabi and Balochi influences.

Cricket is another unifying feature. The success of Model Colony's players demonstrates how sport can create a shared identity across linguistic and ethnic communities.

Why Korangi Matters to Pakistan

Korangi matters because it represents the productive side of Pakistan's largest city.

Its factories manufacture goods. Its workers keep industries running. Its markets serve millions. Its schools educate the next generation. Its cricket grounds have produced international players.

The district also shows how planned urban development can change over time. A township created for workers in 1959 eventually became a metropolitan district of more than three million people.

The Future of Korangi

Korangi's future depends on whether industrial growth can be matched with better urban infrastructure.

The district needs reliable utilities, efficient transport, cleaner industrial production, stronger schools and healthcare, and better public spaces.

The industrial economy should not be treated as separate from the residential city. Workers live near factories, families depend on local markets and young people need education that connects them with modern employment.

Korangi therefore offers an important lesson for Pakistan: economic growth is most sustainable when industrial development and the quality of everyday urban life improve together.

From the cricket grounds of Model Colony to the factories of Korangi Industrial Area, from Landhi's working communities to Shah Faisal's transport corridors, Korangi is one of the clearest examples of the people, industry and neighbourhood life that power Karachi.
