Allai is the high valley west of the Indus climb from Thakot. It was a tehsil of Battagram until 22 January 2023, when the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government raised it to district status in Hazara Division. Banna is the headquarters. This page does not glue Allai back onto Battagram’s older half-million count. Battagram now has its own slimmer sheet.
PBS 2023 for this district (Allai tehsil table): 218,149 people, area 804 km², density about 271 per km². Urban column: zero. Literacy 35.71 percent overall — 52.16 percent for men, 18.43 percent for women. Under the 2017 census the same belt was listed near 180,000. The road from Thakot to Banna is about two hours when it is open. Most villages after Banna are still jeep tracks or walking paths.

Banna is the administrative name people use for the headquarters. Pashto village is not “the Pashto language” — it is one of the eight councils. The valley is bounded north and east by Kohistan, south by the Kaghan / Nandihar side, and west by the Indus.
Pashto is the main house language on the 2023 tongue table. Older notes also list Hindko and Kohistani speech on the edges. Do not treat a tourist pamphlet as a fresh PBS row.
Allai was a small princely holding under its own Khans until it acceded to Pakistan. It later sat inside Battagram as a tehsil. The January 2023 notification made it a district so the valley would have its own deputy commissioner instead of sending every file down to Battagram bazaar. Public lists still name Prince Muhammad Nawaz Khan as chief of Allai Valley. That is a local title, not a substitute for the district administration.
Female literacy at 18 percent is the education fact for this page. Degree students leave for Battagram, Mansehra or Abbottabad. A district hospital at Banna is the local demand after the split. Until wards and staff are complete, Battagram DHQ remains the first public hospital many families still use. A maternity case carried on a wooden stretcher to the nearest jeep road is ordinary administration here, not a rare headline.
The 8 October 2005 earthquake hit this belt hard. Reports from the valley speak of thousands dead and of the road and the old cable way over the Indus being cut for days. Winter snow and monsoon slides still close the climb from Thakot. That date is how older people mark time, not a tourist line.
