Narowal is a late district made from two leftovers. One is a slice of old Sialkot. The other is Shakargarh, the only tehsil of British Gurdaspur that Radcliffe gave to Pakistan. Between them sits a bulge of fields that looks at India across the Ravi.

The 2023 count is 1,950,954 people in 281,536 households on about 2,337 km². Urban only 18 percent. Literacy 75.28 percent — 79.89 among men, 70.49 among women. Punjabi first. Basmati is the crop.

Narowal: Three tehsils on a bulge

Shakargarh — 835 km², 769,339 people, literacy 76.28 percent. Grain market, old railway, Kartarpur village. The tehsil that leaves home when a war starts.

Narowal tehsil — 1,065 km², 680,402 people, literacy 76.78 percent. Town about 131,000. University and medical-college signs.

Zafarwal — 437 km², 501,213 people, literacy 71.72 percent. Own tehsil since 2009.

Narowal: Kartarpur, where the founder stopped

Guru Nanak died at Kartarpur in 1539. Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur is the last address, as Nankana is the first. After 2019 a corridor let Indian pilgrims walk in. The river is older than the corridor.

Narowal: 1971

The Battle of Basantar — also filed as the Battle of Shakargarh — ran through this bulge in December 1971. Residents still describe war as an evacuation, not a parade. Then they come back and sow.

Narowal: Who the towns remember

Dev Anand was born in Shakargarh. Rajendra Kumar is the other film name. Faiz Ahmed Faiz was born at Kala Qader, now in this gazette. Naseer Ahmad Malhi. Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar Khan. Daniyal Aziz. Abrar-ul-Haq is often pasted here; his town is Wazirabad.
