Mohmand sits on the Afghan line north-west of Peshawar. Until 2018 it was an agency. Ghalanai is the headquarters. It is not a municipal city in the 2023 urban lists. The whole district printed as rural. That is the first fact, before any pass story.
Mohmand clans and Safi names are the local map. Pashto is the language. Seven tehsils is a lot of offices for half a million people. Literacy is not the same in each office.
Households 63,973. Population 553,933. Area about 2,296 km². Literacy 31.28 percent — 46.85 percent for men, 15.10 percent for women. Under-tens about 192,000 (35 percent). Sex ratio about 103 men per 100 women.
Pindiali — 454 km², 112,247 people, literacy about 29 percent. Largest count.
Safi — 322 km², 109,620 people, literacy about 26 percent. Second-largest count.
Halimzai — 211 km², 89,149 people, literacy about 45 percent. Highest literacy of the seven. Densest of the printed rows.
Ambar Utman Khel — 273 km², 79,455 people, literacy about 22 percent.
Yake Ghund — 266 km², 63,757 people, literacy about 41 percent.
Upper Mohmand — 513 km², 63,659 people, literacy about 22 percent. Largest land, thin settlement.
Pran Ghar (Pranghar) — 257 km², 36,046 people, literacy about 35 percent. Smallest count.
Halimzai at 45 percent and Upper Mohmand at 22 percent are the same district. A single “Mohmand literacy” sentence hides that.
Degree colleges are new and few. Peshawar is still the exam city for many families. DHQ-level care at Ghalanai is the demand the new district makes. Female literacy at 15 percent is the line that belongs next to any college paragraph. This page is not a border-crossing guide.
